Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of horseback riding exercise and horseback riding machine exercise on serum lipid profile in the elderly.
Methods : A total of 31 healthy elderly people participated in the study. 15 horseback riding exercise group and 16 horseback riding machine exercise group were randomly assigned to the study. The riding exercise program was conducted 25 times a week for 12 weeks. The pre test was performed before the start of the riding exercise program, and the post test was performed after 6 weeks of exercise and 12 weeks after exercise. To determine the changes in serum lipid profiles before and after exercise at 6 weeks and 12 weeks after exercise, repeated measures analysis of variance was used.
Results : As a result of comparing the blood components of each group, TG, TC and LDL-C were decreased in both groups after 12 weeks of riding exercise program but there was no statistically significant difference. On the other hand, both groups increased in HDL-C but there was no statistically significant difference.
Conclusion : In conclusion, the three-dimensional movement of horses through horseback riding exercise and horseback riding machine exercise had a positive effect on the blood lipids of the elderly.
